Tech stocks surge as Fed cuts key rate figure

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Technology stocks surged in early trading Friday as the entire market benefited from the U.S. Federal Reserve cutting the discount rate to 5.75%. Among leading tech stocks, Hewlett-Packard Co. shares rose 75 cents to $46.80 after the technology giant reported upbeat quarterly results on Thursday. Gains also came from Dell Inc. , Apple Inc. , Intel Corp. and Microsoft Corp. . The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 69 points, or almost 3%, to 2,520.
