PS3 firmware update ignores Grand Theft Auto IV issues
PS3 firmware update ignores Grand Theft Auto IV issuesSince the blockbuster games release on April 29th, Grand Theft Auto IV has broken all types of sales records on its way to over $500 million USD in sales in just a couple of weeks. There have however, been reports that PS3 gamers have repeatedly had inexplicable freezes occur during their gaming experience. There were similar issues on the 360 version, but for the most part both companies have stayed mum on the technical problems.

Many hoped though, with the upcoming release of PS3 firmware 2.35 that GTA IV would be patched and they could go on their merry way in Liberty City. According to Al De Leon from Sony Computer Entertainment America however, this is not to be. The official PlayStation blog adds “this update isn’t related to GTA IV”. He did however add that customer services has a solution for the GTA issues. If you are interested, please check here: Sony Customer Services.

As for what the firmware update will entail, Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation network operations, says it is “a relatively minor update to improve stability of some PS3 titles”. Although Sony hasnt said what games, it is clear that GTA IV is not one of them.

IBM makes strides in reducing the cost of solar power

IBM makes strides in reducing the cost of solar power

The largest obstacle involved with focusing solar energy into smaller areas lies with the intense heat produced. This is something we learned as children, sitting on the sidewalk with a magnifying glass in hand. But recently, IBM has taken the reins on the issue, utilizing some of their own heat-dissipation technology they use in their computer hardware for the solar energy field.

By focusing the sun over 2300x, they were able to generate 70 watts of usable electric power out of one square centimeter of silicon photovoltaic panel. This is a vast improvement over the previous attempt by Sungri at 1600x. The heat problems, size of the concentrator itself and the cost are all factors against this amount of power being practical now, but the more efficient and powerful these large companies like IBM can get solar power, the lower the cost will evolve for the normal consumer like you and me.

ASUS Eee 8G PC 8GB SSD Notebook
ASUS has created a huge wave in the sub-notebook portable Internet device markets with their Eee PC. Sub-notebooks are normally wonderfully exotic looking hardware for delightfully high prices. Well, exotic until one looks at the specs. The MacBook air is a great example - it looks like a killer machine until one looks at the combination of the lackluster specs and a price that makes even the most enthusiastic Mac fan blush. As for portable Internet devices, the Nokia N series is the first that comes to mind. Granted, they are really fantastic machines with excellent screens and software, but I am a bit old school I suppose. I still want a real keyboard. The Nokia N810 is close, but like my HTC TyTN, the keyboard is good for casual data entry and not suitable for long sessions of messaging, IRC or typing out documents or spreadsheets. The Nokia and other portable devices tend to also be pretty light on specifications, unless one is willing to pay the obscene price that OQO wants for their sub-sub-notebook.

Governments must intervene to end IP address shortage, says OECD

Governments must intervene to end IP address shortage, says OECD

Businesses alone are not doing enough to avert an impending shortage of Internet Protocol addresses, and governments must work with them to secure the future of the Internet economy, according to a report published Thursday by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The number of IP addresses, needed for Web sites, servers, and PCs to communicate with one another over the Internet, is limited, and almost 85 percent of addresses are now in use. At the current rate of growth, the pool of available addresses will be exhausted by 2011.

Fortunately, a solution to this problem has already been developed: a new version of the Internet Protocol, IPv6, which provides a far greater number of addresses.

Adopting IPv6  means making extensive changes to networking hardware and software. While it's possible for IPv4, the current version, and IPv6 to coexist, and even for one to be carried over, or tunneled through, the other, the address shortage will still have a negative effect on the economy unless IPv6 is adopted all across the Internet, warned the OECD, an economic think tank sometimes described as a club for rich nations.

Internet service providers and businesses with large private networks are not doing enough to prepare for the introduction of IPv6. They should view the move as a commercial and social opportunity, not a financial burden, according to the OECD report.

Customer demand for IPv6 is still low, leading Internet businesses to delay action. The OECD wants governments to use their own buying power to stimulate the market for IPv6 equipment, software and services, and to fund IPv6 research and development.

One sign that demand for IPv6 is growing — and also a good way to test if your own Internet connection is ready for IPv6 — is Google's introduction of direct access to its search engine for IPv6 users, which the company announced on its official blog on Tuesday. The address ipv6.google.com will only work if you have an IPv6 connection, according to Google.

The U.S. government has set a deadline of next month for all government agencies to make their network infrastructure IPv6 compatible, while South Korea has set a goal of converting its infrastructure by 2010. China, too, is developing IPv6 infrastructure, and plans to use the Olympic Games in Beijing showcase intelligent transport and security systems running on IPv6.

The number of potential IPv6 addresses is so large — enough that millions of devices per square meter of the earth's surface could each have their own address — that a Japanese telecommunications operator is using IPv6 to network seismic sensors and traffic lights, allowing it to bring traffic to a safe halt in an earthquake, according to the OECD. Such an extravagant use of IP addresses — the network requires millions of them — would not otherwise be possible given the shortage of IPv4 addresses, the OECD noted.

Apple today announced refreshed iMacs and is offering an unannounced Intel processor as part of the package: The systems can be ordered with a “special” processor that matches the specifications of the 45 nm Core 2 Duo Extreme X9100 processor, which is expected to officially launch with Intel’s Montevina refresh. Once again, Apple has the privilege of offering a faster processor than what PC vendors are selling today.
